Tonight-->HOOCH PROJECT NYC Session #10 - Rittenhouse Rye 25 yrs

The Goal:
A super casual, nonprofit project aiming at discovering what spirits are really about by drinking the best stuff for very little money.
Two, sometimes three times a month I select ONE bottle of an excellent & rare spirit which is then poured at COST at one of my friends' bar. Tasting lasts until the bottle is gone.

What: One bottle of Rittenhouse Rye 25y
How much: poured at cost i-e $6 per oz.
Why is it a good deal: Distilled in 84 at Heaven Hill. 38 single barrels total. We are tasting bottle #20 from barrel #28. 3000 bottles made.
Where: Stella - 213 Front st (Seaport), NYC.
When: Tuesday September 27th.
What Time: I'll open the bottle at 6:30pm sharp; tasting will last until the bottle is gone.
Requirements: be over 21, be there at 6:30pm if you want a chance to get a dram & have at least $6.

About it from the Malt Advocate Mag (now known as The Whisky Advocate)
Note: this review is from a different barrel since those are single barrel bottlings but it gives a good idea of what this is about.....

"Rittenhouse Rye, 25 year old*, (Barrel #1), 50%, $190
Surprisingly lively. Very much like the 21 year old release in this regard, but not as spicy on the nose or palate. Instead, it’s replaced by a layered, satisfying sweetness—not by wood, like the somewhat lethargic, oak-dominated 23 year old release of RR. Older doesn’t mean that it tastes older. Deep, nutty toffee foundation, with nougat, candied tropical fruit, and shoo-fly pie (think molasses). The spices (cinnamon, spearmint, vanilla, cocoa powder) emerge mid-palate and linger, warming the finish. Not as vibrant as the 21 year old expression, but more sophisticated. I can’t speak for the other barrels in this lot, but I think this one is a great example of what a 20+ year old rye whiskey should taste like." - John Hansell
