Over the past five years or so one whiskey label has developed a reputation as the absolute pinnacle of American spirits. Famous chef's and critics sing its praises. Bourbon enthusiasts around the country sign up for the "Pappy Waiting list" at their local liquor stores and wait all year in the hopes that they might land a precious bottle. And in 2013 our thirsty imaginations were ignited by the national news story of the theft of thousands of bottles of the much-prized bourbon.
But what is Pappy Van Winkle? Where does it come from and how has it become such an iconic and coveted whiskey? Most importantly, what does it taste like?
