Shotguns, golf carts and whiskey…sweet! This is a trip like no other. Join us for an exciting day of sporting clay shooting and whiskey tasting and relive the glory days of the Wild West. We’ll start the morning off with a 2-hour guided session of sporting clay shooting with nationally acclaimed instructors.
Imagine heading around a course with golf carts, only instead of hitting balls you’re crushing flying clay targets with a 12-gauge shotgun. As the clay targets fly, our expert guides (the lead instructor has been written up in Forbes as one of the country’s top shooting instructors) will teach you how to hold and fire the shotguns to ensure you blast the targets every time!
After a couple of hours, we’ll finish off with a shoot-out and then (once the guns are put away) head down to a picturesque whiskey distillery. Here we’ll have a picnic lunch overlooking the flowing river, then step inside to enjoy a private tour of the facility and see how they hand-make the whiskey before trying a few different whiskeys and vodkas. This is truly a unique trip and one that you’ll never forget.
Cost: $239
Included: transportation, certified guides, shooting instructor, gun and ammo, 50 targets, picnic lunch, distillery tour, whiskey tasting
Bring: comfortable clothing, closed-toe shoes
Departure: 8:00 am, 43rd St. between 8th and 9th Ave. Look for van or bus on north side of 43rd Street.

Think Kentucky and bourbon as you join executive chef Michael Paley of Louisville's Proof on Main for a celebration of the harvest with five courses of fresh, locally sourced, Southern-influenced Italian cuisine paired with Kentucky's finest. Listen in as Heaven Hill Distilleries' American Whiskey Brand Ambassador Robert Hutchins takes you through a flight of bourbon, while chef Paley prepares dishes like yellowfin tuna crudo with assorted small tomatoes and basils, avocado and feta; raviolo al uovo with eggplant confit, Parmigiano and toasted sesame seeds; and bison tenderloin with simmered leeks, olive oil poached potatoes and sea salt. If at the end of the night you're not a bourbon aficionado, you may not have tasted enough; but more likely you may have tasted too much.
Event Details: $95 includes amuse, bourbon specialty cocktail, five courses with bourbon flight and wines and chef-led tutorial with recipes. All reservations must be secured with a credit card. Cancellation policy is 48 hours notice to receive credit for another class within the fall 2010 season at De Gustibus. No refunds, only credits issued for future classes.

5:30 PM to 8:30 PM
A little piece of Bourbon history will be drunk tonight, as Basil Hayden has been making bourbon for over 200 years, bridging the flavor of rye whiskey and small batch bourbons. Knob Creek, on the other hand, represents a turn of the century styled bourbon and embodies the bold flavor that has made Kentucky famous for bourbon. Aged the longest of the Small Batch Bourbons – 9 years – in charred American white oak, it strikes the senses with a maple sugar aroma, distinctive sweetness and rich, full-bodied flavor. One word = YUM.

Have you wondered exactly what it is that you love about Bourbon? Do you wonder what the heck people are talking about when they say a Scotch is “peaty” Or what that distinct flavor is in Tequila or Gin? You know you like it (or not) but the words to describe it escape you.
This class will define your taste in spirits, teach you the vernacular involved in describing what you’re experiencing, and allow you to articulate what you want in your next drink.
We will taste through a variety of white and brown spirits, first discussing the techniques behind tasting critically, then we’ll identify the flavors typical to each category. Everything will be tasted “blind” in order to remove any biases or preconceived notions. We will talk through the taste, aromas, and overall impressions as a group, cementing our newly formed language skills. Then, to put our newly learned skills to the test, we will conclude the class with one last blind taste test (hint: this isn’t going to be easy).
By the end of class you will have experienced many “ah-ha!” moments. But, more importantly, you will gain a new understanding of your ability to taste and the words to articulate the flavors you’re experiencing. The class will bring together taste and vocabulary, so that you will be able to communicate like a pro and, in the end, drink better. Because isn’t that what it is really all about?
Cheers!

We have the Scots and Irish to thank for giving us the gift of whisk(e)y, but other cultures around the world--from the Americas to Asia to Eastern Europe--are doing a pretty great job of making this magical spirit as well. This class is designed to heighten sensory development for various aromas, tastes and textures of traditional whiskeys, bourbons and ryes. We will discuss what makes whiskey different from other spirits, the difference between the major categories, the role of the barrel and grain selection as well as the aging, and when to spell it "whisky."
