Wood for Thought: Playing Master Blender with Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Event Date: 5/18/2010, 4:45 pm
with Sam Simmons, The Balvenie Ambassador USA (East)
This seminar will offer participants of all backgrounds (novice, enthusiast, professional) the unique opportunity to deconstruct a Scotch Single Malt Whisky by examining its constituent parts with their eyes, noses, and palates, attempt to blend their own single malt using these varied elements, and then take home their creations.
Lead by globally recognized Scotch Whisky expert, Sam "Dr. Whisky" Simmons, participants learn the mechanics of Scotch whisky production, the history of why those Scots insist on using secondhand barrels, and the contemporary effects those traditions have on maturation, marketing, and flavour. Everyone will then get the unique opportunity to nose and taste single cask samples of spirit from one single malt distillery in four (4) different incarnations: as new make, matured in ex-bourbon barrels, matured in ex-sherry barrels, and matured in refill casks (barrels that already held single malt). They will then construct their own whisky using these distinct ingredients, just as a master distiller would in Scotland.
