Dead Distilleries Scotch Whisky Tasting Night
About this event
Food & Drink • Spirits
Throughout the late 1970s to early 2000s, the whisky industry fell on tough times, forcing some of the world's best distilleries to cease production and shut their doors for good. In the spirit of Halloween, we've scoured the world for the few remaining whisky bottles from these dead distilleries and are ready to give you a taste of rare expressions that you won't find in any store near you.
Join New York Adventure Club as we taste and learn our way through five rare Scotch whiskies from famous distilleries that no longer exist, all inside the hidden Flatiron jazz den of The Hot Club of New York.
Led by Kurt Maitland, founder of the Manhattan Whiskey Club and Deputy Editor of the Whiskey Reviewer, our featured expressions of the night will include:
Cambus 33 Year Old (1988) – The Whisky Cellar: A rare grain whisky from a now-demolished Lowland distillery, offering rich notes of almond, toffee, and vanilla after 33 years in American oak.
Glen Albyn (1975) – Gordon & MacPhail: Hailing from a long-lost Highland distillery closed in 1983, this vintage malt delivers soft fruit, honeyed sweetness, and a touch of spice.
Rosebank 8 Year Old (1990) – Murray McDavid: Once dubbed the “King of the Lowlands,” this triple-distilled gem from the original Rosebank site shines with bright floral and citrusy character.
Connoisseurs Choice Caperdonich 13 Year Old (1998) – Gordon & MacPhail: A smooth and fruity expression from the Speyside distillery demolished in 2010, known for its gentle banana and vanilla notes.
Imperial 19 Year Old (1995) – Signatory: From a shuttered Speyside icon, this bold single malt blends pineapple, oak spice, and a waxy finish with orchard fruit complexity.
As a special treat, The Hot Club of New York will curate a selection of rare 78rpm records throughout the evening on their vintage high-fidelity sound system.
Kurt regularly travels to whiskey distilleries throughout the world and is ready to answer any and all questions about these storied spirits.
See you there (if you dare)!
*While light snacks will be provided, we highly recommend eating beforehand

About Kurt
Born in Brooklyn, with stints in PA, Boston, and DC before returning to his beloved New York, Kurt Maitland started his whisk(e)y journey with drams of Jameson, the beloved drink of a college friend. From there he moved on to appreciating Maker’s Mark and Knob Creek and has been exploring the world of whiskey ever since. He currently nurses a fascination with old books on the whiskey industry, dead distilleries, and a love of Japanese whisky that led him to be consulted by The Atlantic.
Kurt is one of the best-known faces in New York City’s whiskey circuit. He is currently the Deputy Editor of the Whiskey Reviewer website, has released a book on cocktails called Drink, and is in the process of wrapping his second book on Cocktails. Kurt was/is also the writer/editor of the dormant, not-quite-dead-yet, and perhaps starting to stir again – The Good, the Bad, and the Funky music blog.
