Home Baker’s Meet Up and Grain-to-Glass Pop-up Bar
with GrowNYC Greenmarket , June Russell
Price: $15.00
In New York magazine’s ‘Reasons to Love New York’ issue (Dec. 11, 2011), editors Rob Patronite and Robin Raisfield declared this the‘local-floured moment in dough.’ Since 2008, Greenmarket has sought out and welcomed new grain producers into the city’s farmers markets. In turn, more and more bakers (those who sell at Greenmarket, and notable bakers around the city alike) are incorporating regionally grown grain into their products. The results have been manifold: new and better baked goods for sale, increased biodiversity in the region’s farmland, and the proliferation of new mills, malting facilities and distilleries. That means you can now bake a loaf of local bread, and drink your local cocktail, too. Which is exactly what will ensue at Greenmarket’s second Home Baker’s Meet Up and inaugural Grain-to-Glass Pop-up Bar.
Join us to compare notes on flavor and what techniques, flours and starters yield the best crust and crumb. Quaff cocktails that feature whiskies with mashbills that include locally grown grains, and learn from the distillers at New York Distilling Company and Tuthilltown how using local grains impacts their spirits. Mingle with professional bakers, taste the loaves they are baking with local flour, and ply them with questions. For complimentary admission, bring a loaf of your own home baked best, made with local flour, of course. (Visit Greenmarket’s website, http://www.grownyc.org/greenmarket/grains/at-market, for a list of where to purchase locally grown and milled flour) Or, for those of us who are baking-challenged, purchase a ticket on this page.
If you will be bringing a loaf in exchange for your admission, please RSVP to [email protected] .
