Scotches from the Isles
It seems, sometimes, as though there are only a few words in the Scotch lexicon with respect to place: Highland, Islay, maybe Lowland. Highland has sub regions (Speyside, for one) and there is also Campbeltown (Springbank), and the Island Scotches. Although an island, Islay (Laphroaig) is its own production area we don't think of it as part of the Island Scotches.
The Island Scotches are in the archipelago off the West coast of Scotland known as the Hebrides. And more specifically, they are in the part known as the Inner Hebrides. The one exception is the Isles of Orkney (Highland Park), which is off the northern tip of Scotland where the North Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean. The islands in the Inner Hebrides with commercial distilleries are Skye, Mull, Jura and Arran, and there are only a few distilleries amongst them.
The Isle of Arran Distillery, one of the few remaining independent distilleries, has some of the cleanest waters in Scotland (and that's saying something!). They don't use caramel coloring or artificial coloring, and the scotch is non-chillfiltered.
We will taste scotches from the Isle of Arran Distillery at our upcoming seminar,
as well as others.
