Wednesday, September 26th at 6:00 p.m.: Holy Sherry

It is obvious that ex-Sherry wine barrels have come back in favor lately. Or is it that Single Malt Scotch Whisky producers realize the marketing benefits of its mention? Well, a “sherry finish” is sparkling, but it is not always gold. There is Sherry and there is Sherry so-to-speak. Indeed you can be attracted by a dark looking bottle and you may think “rich, heavy, powerful”, and you might be right But what if you know that a particular bottling was exclusively matured in ex-Sherry butts, yet its color is on the light side…? It really doesn’t mean much. We are constantly fooled by appearance. On top of that, there are different oak species used in the making of barrels destined to the Sherry wine maturation. Explore various combinations: Sherry matured Scotch when young vs old, peated and non-peated, from US oak and European oak, from dry Sherry wine barrels vs sweet Sherry wine barrels, full maturation vs finish only. It’s a bit complex, but, as for all spirituous matters, learning is best done in good company with the right whisky in hand! Sherry wines, dry and sweet. Light passed hors d’oeuvres, cheese buffet, dried fruits and nuts. $120/seat
